The ultimate objective of this book is to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of concepts in parasitism: relationships between parasites and hosts and between parasites and environment, the general epidemiological aspects of parasites that affect humans, the socioeconomic factors affecting the transmission of parasites, the life-cycle, infection, transmission, the diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures for specific parasites. All the chapters in this book are followed by the relevance of the described parasitic diseases in Kenya.
This book will give the students a real picture of the significance of the parasitic diseases in their immediate environments. Each chapter is also followed by important review questions either in the form of essays, short questions and multiple
choices to help the students test their understanding of the topics. It is highly believed that this text book will make a good reference for graduate and post graduate students taking courses in parasitology in the various degree programmes at the Universities. The book will serve as a useful resource for teachers of parasitology.
About the Author
Dr Eunice Anyango Owino is a lecturer and research scientist at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She is a medical entomologist with vast experience on vector borne diseases and teaches parasitology and vector biology at both undergraduate and post graduate levels at the University. Dr Owino holds a PhD in Entomology (PhD), and an MSc in Medical Entomology (MSc). She has conducted extensive research on vector borne disease control in Kenya and is currently working on a number of projects looking into improving our understanding of parasites, vectors and environmental interactions in disease maintenance and transmission. She has published extensively in the field. Dr Owino is also mentoring MSc and PhD students.
