What is Print on Demand (POD) mode? How does it compare with traditional printing?

Print-on-Demand (POD) is a printing mode where you can print as and when required. In sharp contrast with bulk printing, it is a model supported by high-end digital printers which enable the printing of a few copies and thus a personalized service can be offered.

In a traditional publishing situation, the publisher delivers a huge number of copies to the author which then becomes his responsibility to sell. This automatically creates pressure on him. To deal with this setback of the publishing world, print on demand has been introduced. With this technology, authors can judge the market demand for a book and order copies accordingly. This is an economically viable printing option for most self-published authors as they do not have to get thousands of copies printed and stocked and then lose sleep over selling them and the cost of printing on demand does not depend on the number of copies being printed.

What technology is used in Print on Demand (POD) model?

The technology used in this model is digital printing, where each copy is printed independently. This means the number of copies in the order does not influence the cost of each copy. But, in offset printing mode, printing a single copy is not cost effective unless the material is printed in bulk. It uses a plate for transferring the impression to each page. The cost of creating the plate is quite high. That is why publishing one or a few copies is not cost-effective. But, when many copies are published, the cost is distributed among each copy thus reducing the per copy cost for printing. So, offset printing comes with an obligation for bulk printing as long as the cost is concerned. But, in the case of digital printing, there is no such restriction on the number of copies which gives author-publishers freedom and ease with printing and opens a world of new possibilities.
