Having a career as an author is a dream which many of us tend to take up in their lives. Writing is a hard task which requires, time, attention and dedication. Additionally, to publish and print your own book, you have to go through the routes of publication houses, editors and marketers which are also extremely time consuming. After toiling for about a year or two sometimes, a book gets its release to the audience, and sometimes, the pay for your efforts may not be that lucrative in the beginning, but you need to keep at it. Hence before embarking on a journey that can be rewarding but also tedious, you must consider the qualities within you. Look out for signs that you can achieve your dreams of a writer-

  1. Do You Scribe Your Knowledge – If a sentence makes sense to you, you must have it. Do you have the habit of jotting down lines while reading through a book? If you prefer to summarize a book or note down information or lines while reading through, that means the lines make sense to you and you don’t want to forget them. You scribble it on a paper so that you can store them for your reference. This is a sign that you can reproduce that knowledge in your own book.
  2. Do You Love to Read – Reading is a very important part of writing. The more you read, the more ideas you get. Your vocabulary develops, your thoughts are enriched. Regular reading is a must to keep your stream of consciousness flowing. So if you love to read a lot, you can be a writer.
  3. Can You Better Explain It in Writing – Some of us feel that they can better explain a situation, their own self, or an idea, much better in writing than talking. They may not be great speakers, but definitely they are great thinkers. If you are one of them, you can be an author.
  4. Do You Call Yourself an Introvert – Many writers are not great social people; they stay in their own world ruminating on plots and characters. So, regular people often find it difficult to communicate with them. Also, authors prefer less to go out in the crowd; they are shy and introvert in their communications. If you notice such a trait in yourself, you might have the potential to succeed as an author.
  5. Do You Try to Find Adventure – Have you ever tried asking your neighbor about his/her high school romance which culminated into a successful relationship after many many years? Or have you been keen on understanding the arrest of a thief? Or have you pushed yourself into risky situations to experience adventure? If that has happened, probably your mind is looking for a story.
  6. Can You Create Stories Out of Real Life Scenes? – Our life is made up of different scenes and frames. Every moment there is new scene, or multiple parallel scenes going on around us which have characters from the real life, in action. Does your mind, take up these scenes to fabricate a plot and a story? If you find a man running out of a petrol pump shop, do you start framing the plot of a crime thriller in your mind? Imagination is a must skill if you want to publish and print your own book. Imagination builds narratives; it gives depth to characters and color to a story.
  7. Can You Make a Critical Analysis of Others’ Writings – Identifying good writing, or useful tropes and techniques of writing is also a skill which helps massively if you want to be a good author yourself. Exercise your brain to catch interesting words and phrases, good themes and unique techniques while you are reading.
  8. Do You Value Your Experience – If you see a goldmine in every experience, you might just be willing to turn them to your next story. That is a sign that you must be an author.
  9. Do You Value Your Journals and Books over Your Shoes or Clothes – If you have started writing and you have lost your saved file, do you fret? You may not care as much for your lost shoes and clothing. If yes, you are having the traits of an author. An author has to write multitudes of pages, sometimes, many files of work and it is very valuable for him or her. If you lose that, you lost a part of your mind, so if you want to publish and print your own book, the first intuition should be valuing your journaled work, and the books you read.
  10. Do You Speak with Yourself – If you talk to yourself, you are basically thinking out loud and creating a listener for yourself so that you can produce more creative thoughts. Self- consultation is best way for an author to validate his/herself.

So if you have these signs in you, you can start pursuing your aspirations to be a writer because you are already prepared for it.

I have seen myself manifesting all of the above listed traits. Thus far l have completed and published one book but my challenge is in not been able to further more with writing even though I love doing so. I have not been consistent with my writings. I have lots of title to write about but I have not too serious with it.
