8 Problems That Can Be Solved By Reading Books

Books are the cure-all for most of the problems. It is indeed true that most of the mental problem, trauma and disorder can be cured only by reading books. It is the best advice one can give to a tormenting soul. Some of you may think it is an overstatement. Well, in my experience, it’s true. Books can actually solve just about any problem life throws on you. People who grew up reading books or listening stories are usually more composed and resilient than those who have literally no connection with books in their lives. And if you are one of those bookworms, you probably can remember the solace books bring or solutions they offer. And in that case you are well aware of the impact of reading books in getting over a poor mark-sheet or a broken heart. Let’s look at the 10 problems which can be treated by reading.

1. Books Can Inevitably Heal A Heart Break

When we talk about a heart-break, we do not necessarily mean a clinical condition involving a cardiac arrest, but the aftermath of a serious romantic engagement. If you’ve ever suffered a broken heart, you surely know how painful and lonely it is. All the world suddenly seems to be conspiring with you. In such a hostile situation, it becomes incredibly difficult to bear the oceanic grief that is boiling in you. It becomes necessary to share. Now, how do books help? Reading stories that also deal with breakups can be a big help. It shows you that you are not alone who is dumped and betrayed. Your longings are natural and your pain is universal. Books open up a world that not only accommodate your complex emotions and inexplicable mental state but also treat them by offering an alternative source of inspiration and encouragement.

2. Books Offer Valuable Advice

“To be or not to be, that is the question!” Many a time, we are confronted with the biggest doubt of our life. We do not know which road to take to reach our desired destination. Books have a role to play here. If Characters like Margaret in North and South, Clym in The Return of the Native, Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, have given us some of the best life advice. Whether it’s through fictional characters or real life experiences, books are the things to turn to whenever you need some wise advice that would change your life. Books make you want to do what the characters did in a similar situation and you emerge as a stronger person.

3. Books Are Amazing Stress Buster

The latest studies have found that reading helps reduce stress levels up to 60 percent. That’s unbelievable?  On a personal level, I can relate to this. Whenever I am completelty stressed out, I take time to read and it helps me slow down. Yeah! You need to slow down to ease out your constantly racing mind. Reading takes our minds to a different place away from our daily grindings and anxieties and uplifts our spirit to a higher plane and helps us realize the triviality of daily experience, desires and longings. This de-focusing is necessary if you want to reduce stress. So the next time you are down on your scores or a domestic brawl or even workplace tension, grab a book and go through a few chapters. It makes you contemplate in a wiser way on your life and you realize that this is just a phase and won’t last forever.

4. Books Generate Motivation inspires Creativity

Books are the greatest influencers. You know it if you have felt forced to go on a holiday, or eaten a particular type of meal after the character in the book you are reading did the same. Books shower immense creativity and motivation on your otherwise mundane existence.

5. Books Soothes Your Sense of Alienation

Man is a gregarious animal and spends every moment looking to make friends. Most people fear loneliness because it is tricky to deal with. There is a lot to manage single-handedly if you stay alone. But while books cannot remove risks and threats on a physical level, they fairly compensate for the loneliness. When you read, the reading matters become a part of your thought process. The characters in the fiction and essays surround you all the time leaving you no scope for any attention to your little world with ordinary people and commonplace problems.

6. Books Can Make You A Better Person

A popular saying goes like, ‘reading cures fascism and travelling cures racism’.

Books probably give chance to both reading and travelling (vicariously). And if you can get riddance from the two above-said vice, aren’t you a better person? Reading fiction will give you a peep into the character’s insight, decision, opinions and much more. And you as a reader get personal with the character almost to the point of being empathetic. That improves the way you deal with people. Different stories introduce different perspectives and help you see the world from someone else’s shoes and we realize that there are always different circumstances to consider. Reading cultivates patience and tolerance in you – two much-needed virtues in the world we live today.

7. Books Improve Your Memory And Intelligence

The ground rule is ‘Practice makes a man perfect’. Just as a good exercise can improve your body fitness, reading improves your memory and overall intelligence. Reading adds new words to your daily vocabulary and introduces new ideas, and facts that you did not know before. This newly-acquired knowledge will help you deal yourself and surroundings in a better way.

8. Books Make You Happier

If books have already solved most of your depressions like a divorce or a demotion at least on an emotional level, how can you not be happy? And happiness does not always mean the absence of a problem, it means the wisdom to deal with problems more efficiently. Books increase happiness levels for multiple reasons as it helps your mind calm down. If you are someone who loves reading, then you probably do not bother about the end-result. For you, reading has its own happiness. It’s as easy as that.

So whenever in doubt, anxiety or dilemma, head off to a library or bookstore and bury yourself in the pages of a good classic. And you turn a new leaf. Guaranteed!
