Who thought one day creativity will be found outside of human beings? Artificial Intelligence has changed the entire look of the creative world, especially the journalism and publishing business. In Japan, computers are now taking part in literary competitions, can you believe it? In this era of “cutting edge writers” those who are sceptical about using AI might actually lag behind. This rapid progress of AI is not at all slackening; rather it is finding new applications. Let us talk about some significant impacts of AI on the literature world.

  1. Editing- Before AI came into picture, editing a manuscript was one of the most complicated and time-taking processes. But now softwares like ProWritingAid, Grammarly, AutoCrit etc have made this job much easier. There was a time when there was no easy way to tell if the content was plagiarised but now we can do that in a jiffy. Not just that, these software will categorise your writing (based on whether it is thesis, fiction or nonfiction) and edit it accordingly. You can even adjust the tone of the writing. All these features have made writing easier therefore people are now coming forward with their manuscripts, it has given people the needed courage and motivation to write their ideas down.
  2. Foreseeing Worth-Reading Books – Previously it took great effort and time to find a good read but AI has made it much easier. There was a time when people used to visit libraries, bookstores and ask other readers for suggestions but now there is no need for anyone to do that. A desired classic, a rom-com or a thrilling horror is just a few keys away.
  3. Threat of Replacement- Now something that keeps haunting us is the question that won’t these softwares kick us out of the competition and replace us? Well, they actually m With the help of AI we are now doing an eight-hour work in only in two hours. Research shows that by 2050 AI will be able to produce bestsellers without any human involvement. To make this happen even faster Google along with Stanford University and University of Massachusetts have introduced AI to eleven thousand books to improve its natural language. And later the machine composed a poem from two given lines.
  4. Increase in Quantity- Artificial Intelligence is not showing any signs of slowing down and if it keeps developing, soon there will be a creative explosion. We will have uncountable literary works. It sounds good but here are shades to this fact. Research says despite the fact that AI has creative quality, it is still inadequate when it comes to decode the human psyche. Therefore no matter how many books we get, they might lack in precision and depth.
  5. Unemployment- The threat of unemployment is another issue that troubles us. If AI starts thinking exactly like humans and starts producing refined concepts and ideas, we will be out of business soon. Fields such as publishing, journalism etc are using AI for their business in a great magnitude. These software might not even need human supervision anymore therefore the age of AI might bring a wave of unemployment.

All the above mentioned points sound like a threat to the human race, especially to those who have built their lives on creativity but even after all these issues we need to keep one thing in mind that it is not easy to take over humans. At one point or another, creativity will need human touch. Everything that we feel, everything that we go through reflects in our writings: that is why literature is called the mirror of the society and it is not possible to create that mirror without human involvement. For “spontaneous overflow of powerful emotion”, it is important to have emotion and when it comes to emotional intelligence surpassing humans is still quite far.
