Set against the turbulent backdrop of 19th and 20th century Africa, ‘Without the Beanpole’ explores a community caught between tradition and change. Through the lives of two sons of a celebrated strongman, the novel traces the personal and social upheavals that accompany the arrival of Western education and new ways of life among the Igbo people. At the heart of the story stands a determined white educator who struggles to keep a village school alive for the benefit of future generations. As old beliefs confront unfamiliar ideas, families, friendships, and ambitions are tested. Rich in cultural detail and human drama, “Without the Beanpole” is a compelling portrait of a society negotiating the promises and costs of change.
